It’s a compelling thought, but in truth, I believe no one possesses complete confidence. Beneath the surface, there’s often a hint of nervousness or anxiety that’s skillfully masked. Despite receiving praise for my apparent confidence and boldness in various performances, such as dramas, stage presentations, story narrations, and emceeing, the underlying anxiety I experience remains my secret, invisible to the audience. Even the esteemed poet Kalidasa said this when presenting his play: ‘बलवदपि शिक्षितानामात्मन्यप्रत्ययं चेतः’ – ‘The minds of men, although well-instructed, lack confidence in themselves!’
Nonetheless, to address the question – my pick is King Raghu from the illustrious Raghuvamsha. While King Dilipa also holds a special place in my admiration, King Raghu captivates me the most, particularly since the entire lineage bears his name. In the Raghuvamsha, considered one of the five major epics in Sanskrit, Mahakavi Kalidasa exquisitely depicts King Raghu’s bravery. A dedicated chapter vividly outlines his archery prowess and his successful endeavors to unite the kingdoms of Bharata under his reign during his nationwide expedition. However, what truly enamors me about King Raghu is his audacious decision to challenge Kubera, the God of Wealth, to secure the necessary funds for a visiting student. This bold act is elaborately described in my article available at https://www.indica.today/quick-reads/benevolent-kings-of-bharatam-tales-of-generosity/
Kubera, recognizing King Raghu’s valor, filled the royal treasury with gold coins, admitting defeat and thus preventing a potential conflict. Surely, King Raghu stands as the epitome of confidence!
