There are numerous skills I yearn to master, yet I firmly believe there’s nothing that can’t be attained through diligent practice and learning. However, the one ability I truly wish I possessed is the foresight to predict the future or manifest outcomes, much like the ancient sages of lore. For instance, King Dilipa, faced with the despair of childlessness, sought guidance from Sage Vashishta. With his extraordinary gift, the sage discerned that a curse from a cow was the root of the king’s plight. He advised the king to dutifully serve the cow, Nandini. Following this counsel led to a miraculous turn of events, and lo and behold, King Dilipa was blessed with a son named Raghu.
Echoing this theme, in Uttara Ramacharitham, penned by the esteemed poet Bhavabhuti, it is said: लौकिकानां हि साधूनामर्थं वागनुवर्तते।ऋषीणां पुनराद्यानां वाचमर्थोऽनुधावति।। (laukikAnAM hi sAdhUnAmarthaM vAganuvartate| RRiShINAM punarAdyAnAM vAchamartho.anudhAvati||) – “While ordinary individuals recount past events, the truly great are those seers whose foresight shapes the future, with reality unfolding to align with their predictions.” This profound distinction elevates the sage’s insights, showcasing the power of words to not only describe the world but to shape it.
