Oh my! I don’t think I can stop with just three. If you’re into Tamil and Sanskrit literature like me, there’s a plethora of books out there that will undoubtedly have a profound impact.
Take the epic Ramayana by Maharishi Valmiki, where countless life lessons are imparted through its rich narrative. The characters are incredibly motivating. One that impressed me deeply is Brahmarishi Viswamitra, who faced innumerable hurdles and often forgot his goals, but ultimately, perseverance wins. This is just one example—there are countless other stories and characters that inspire.
Then, there’s the epic Mahabharata, which I consider an encyclopedia of wisdom. The saying “यदिहास्ति तदन्यत्र यनेनेहास्ति न तत् क्वचित्” (What is here may be found elsewhere; what is not here is nowhere else) is not said lightly. It offers myriad stories and life lessons. If you ever need guidance on how to navigate any situation, this is the book to read.
Thirukkural, a Tamil classic, imparts timeless wisdom through its couplets. Written in chaste Tamil, it often requires explanation, but its teachings are gems that guide one towards a successful life.
Beyond these, I’ve delved into numerous novels in Sanskrit and Tamil, each offering unique insights. In English, I adore Shakespeare—perhaps cliché, but undeniably impactful—with works like A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, and As You Like It, to name a few. Additionally, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey have left a lasting impression on me. The tales of the Trojan War and Greek mythology fueled my teenage fantasies.
So yes, as a true bibliomaniac, how can I possibly stop at just three books?
