अद्य द्रमिडनवसंवत्सरः। इदं दिनं प्रामुख्यमावहति सम्प्रदाये नः। बाल्ये यदा चेन्नैपुरिवासिनी आसम् तदा मठं गत्वा आचार्याशीः प्राप्यते प्रतिवर्षं यतोहि दिनेस्मिन् विरामो भवेत्। तदा क्रियते तर्हि वर्षोयं सकलदः भवेदिति विश्वासः। अद्यापि पार्श्वस्थमन्दिरं गत्वा भगवद्दर्शनं प्राप्यैव आगमम्।

द्रमिडसंवत्सरस्य नाम संस्कृते वर्तते। इदमेव द्रमिडसंस्कृतयोः गाढं सम्बन्धः प्रेम च। भाषाद्वयमपि नेत्रद्वयमिव द्रमिडजनानाम्। षष्टिः संवत्सरनामानि विद्यन्ते। कस्यचित् षष्टितमे वयसि तस्य जन्म संवत्सरस्य नाम भवेत्। अतः एव षष्ट्यब्धपूर्तेः महत्त्वम् आचरणीयमपि च।

अस्य संवत्सरस्य नाम “विश्वावसुः” इति। विश्वं वसु यस्य सः (संवत्सरः) इति बहुव्रीहिः। तर्हि विश्ववसुः इत्येव भवितव्यं किल। कुतो विश्वा इति दीर्घः इति प्रश्ने सति “विश्वस्य वसुराटोः” इति पाणिनिसूत्रं विद्यते (६॰३॰१२८) यत्र वसु वा राट् इति पदे उत्तरपदे स्तः चेत् पूर्वाक्षरस्य दीर्घ भवेदतः अयं संवत्सरः “विश्वावसुः”।

This brought to mind the intriguing case of विश्वामित्रः, which ideally should have been विश्वमित्रः based on the बहुव्रीहि principle: “विश्वं मित्रं यस्य सः” (one whose friend is the world). However, it is elongated to विश्वामित्रः. Maharshi Panini addresses this in Sutra 6.3.130: “मित्रे चर्षौ”, where he explains that when the second element (उत्तरपद) is मित्रं and refers to a sage (ऋषिः), the first element (पूर्वपद) विश्वं undergoes elongation (दीर्घः भवति). Thus, the name becomes विश्वामित्रः। Now, if you’re wondering about the 129th Sutra, it refers to विश्वानरः (अहं वैश्वानरो भूत्वा – rings a bell?), which also discusses the elongation of विश्व.

It seems something intriguing is happening with the elongation of विश्वपदम्, as indicated by the associated principles and sutras. While this is fascinating, I digress.
