Happy Sri-Jayanthi!

Note: This guideline applies only to Śrī Ahobila Maṭham śiṣyas, since I follow only that sampradāya and the Āhnika-grantha was authored by Śrīmad Azhagiya Siṅgar, the 45th Jeer of Śrī Ahobila Maṭham.

Rule for Celebrating Sri Jayanthi

Primary Rule: Celebration should be on Siṃha (Āvani) Māsa, Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa Aṣṭamī, with Rohiṇī Nakṣatra.

⚠️ Condition: There must be no overlap of Saptamī or Kṛttikā Nakṣatra, even for a vināḍi. This is termed śuddhāṣṭamī-sahita-rohiṇī.(शुद्धाष्टमीसहितरोहिणी)

If this exact combination is not available, then:

  1. Check for śuddha-rohiṇī + Navamī (शुद्धरोहिणी + नवमी) — which occurs today, and hence we celebrate Śrī Jayanthi today in the USA.✅
  2. If that is also not available, then check for Mṛgaśīrṣa + Navamī/Daśamī.

Addressing the Pūrva-pakṣa

Some may argue that since Rohiṇī Nakṣatra also occurs on Sept 13th, and as per the rule, when a Nakṣatra occurs twice in a month the festival should be observed on its second occurrence, the celebration ought to be on Sept 13th.
This is a valid point, so let us examine carefully:

  • Sept 13th: Saptamī + Rohiṇī.
As per the primary rule, there must not be Saptamī even for a moment. Hence, this day is ruled out — Śrī Jayanthi cannot be ❌ celebrated.
  • Sept 14th: Aṣṭamī + Mṛgaśīrṣa.
Rule 3 allows Mṛgaśīrṣa with Navamī or Daśamī, not with Aṣṭamī. Hence, this day is also ruled out.❌

Conclusion

Therefore, in line with the instructions of HH in the Āhnikam:

  • No śuddha Rohiṇī with Aṣṭamī this month.
  • Śuddha Rohiṇī + Navamī occurs today.

👉 Therefore, Śrī Jayanthi is to be celebrated today (in the USA).

(I’m honestly so impressed with the SAM USA Calendar Team—they nailed the calculations to the very last detail. Hats off to you all!)

FYI – In Bharatham, it is still Adi so they can’t celebrate today!

Visual representation for easy understanding!

Note – I also had a kutūhala (doubt/curiosity) since Śrī Sannidhi Śiṣyas have a feast on Jayanthi, whereas others observe upavāsa. I found the answer in Āhnika!
