मत्पुरातनपत्रिकापठनमनुवर्तते – अद्य आश्चर्यचूडामणिरिति शक्तिभद्रविरचितनाटकात् पद्यमेकमवलोकयाम यत्र रामसीतयोः प्रेम निरुप्यते कविना। प्रसङ्गस्तु हनुमान् सीताविश्वासार्हो भवितुं प्रयतते। तदा रामेण कथितं किंचिद् वृत्तान्तमुवाच।

आयातं मामपरिचितया वेलया मन्दिरं ते चोरोदण्ड्यस्त्वमिति मधुरं व्याहरन्त्या भवत्या।

मन्दे दीपे मधुलवमुचां मालया मल्लिकानां बद्धं चेतो दृढतरमिदं बाहुबन्धच्छलेन।।

अन्वयः -> अपरिचितया वेलया ते मन्दिरम् आयातं मां भवत्या मधुरं व्याहरन्त्या ‘चोरो दण्ड्यः त्वम् इति’ मन्दे दीपे मधुलवमुचां मल्लिकानां मालया बाहुबन्धच्छलेन इदं चेतः दृढतरं बद्धम्।

अर्थः -> विवाहात् परं प्रतिदिनं रामः गुरुसेवानन्तरं रात्रौ नियमितसमयं सीतागृहं ययौ। कस्मिंश्चिद्दिने रामः सीतागृहमायातुं विललम्बे तदा कुपिता सीता द्वारं पिदधौ। विलम्बेन आयातं रामं द्वारि वीक्ष्य कुपिता सीता “अयं चोरः दण्ड्यः” इति स्वशिरसि धृतया मालया तं बबन्ध, रामोपीदं बन्धनं भोग्यं मत्वा तस्मिन् कर्मणि मुमुदे। अनेन कर्मणा सीतया रामस्य मनोपि बद्धमिति कवेः विवक्षा। इदं कर्म यत् केवलं रामसीतयोः अन्तरङ्गं जानीयात् तद्धनुमता’शोकवने तिष्ठन्तीं सीतमुक्त्वा “मयि विश्वसिषि! रामदूतोहम्” इति निरूपयामास।

Translation – When, at an unseemly hour, I entered your shrine,
You spoke sweetly — “Thief! You must be punished!” —
The lamp was dim, the air was rich with jasmine and honey,
And my heart was bound still tighter — beneath the guise of your embrace.

The poet was likely inspired by Periyazhwar, who has conveyed this idea with remarkable conciseness in the following pasuram:

I just want to exclaim, “How romantic!” There’s such a delicate interweaving of humor, love, and sweetness — where the “punishment” transforms into an embrace, and the “thief” into a lover in this exquisite Śṛṅgāra rasa poem, set in the graceful Mandākrāntā meter. Truly, this is the kind of verse I can delight in and read over and over again!

I never imagined Rama as a romantic hero, yet the more I read, the more I discover his tall, dark, and handsome persona taking shape before me. Suddenly he emerges not just as an epic figure, but as a compelling romantic lead. :)
