The Allure of Autumn:Ritusamhara

Daily writing prompt
What is your favorite season of year? Why?

Well, it is Autumn, and the weather is simply perfect—neither too hot nor too cold. The fall colors bring a serene peace to our minds. While I do love summer, this time I am captivated by the allure of Fall. There is even a beautiful Tamil song that sings of the “azhagaana ilayudirkaalam” (the lovely season of Fall).

Mahakavi Kalidasa, in his work “Ritusamhara,” eloquently describes all the seasons. In one such verse dedicated to Autumn, he writes:

शरदि कुमुदसङ्गाद्वायवो वान्ति शीता
विगतजलदवृन्दा दिग्विभागा मनोज्ञाः।
विगतकलुषमम्भः श्यानपङ्का धरित्री
विमलकिरणचन्द्रं व्योम ताराविचित्रम्।।

Translation: In Autumn, a cool breeze carries the fragrance of lilies, and the skies in all directions are clear and free of rain-bearing clouds. The waters sparkle with clarity, and the earth is dry and unmarred by mud. The night is magnificent beyond words, adorned with a radiant moon and a dazzling array of constellations.
