अस्मिन् लेखे पराधिकारचर्चाकरणेन कस्यचिद्गतिः का भवेदित्यवलोकयाम। तदर्थं कथा काचिद्वर्तते। कश्चित् कृपणस्स्वगेहे गर्दभशुनकौ पालयति। रात्रावयं गृहे पत्न्या सह सुखेन स्वपीति। गृहाद्बहिः श्वा च रासभो वर्तेते तदा मध्यरात्रे चोराः आगच्छन्। प्रकृत्या श्वा भषेत् परमयं श्वा शब्दमकुर्वन्नास्ते। अनेन व्यवहारेण कुपितो रासभः श्वानं पृच्छति – भोः श्वन्! अमूदृग् व्यवहारो नोचितः त्वया रक्षणकार्यं कार्यम् इति। तदा श्वा कृपणस्यास्योपकारो न क्रियत इति अयं सम्यगस्मान् न पालयति न भोजयत्यपीति अवोचत्। तदा रासभः तथाप्यस्मदीयस्वामी जागरणीयः। त्वया त्वत्तः कार्यं न क्रियते चेदपि मयानुष्ठीयत इति उदित्वा उच्चैः क्रन्दति यस्माद् भीताश्चोरा अधावन्। अमुष्मिन् काल एव गृहस्वामी भङ्गनिद्रः बहिरागत्य किमपि वैपरीत्यमलक्षयित्वा रासभः विना कारणं क्रन्दतीति निर्णीयामुं रासभं दण्डेनाताडयत्।

अस्याः नीतिः अमुष्मिन् पद्ये विद्यते-

पराधिकारचर्चां यः कुर्यात् स्वामिहितेच्छया ।
स विषीदति चीत्काराद् गर्दभस्ताडितो यथा ॥

यदस्माकं कार्यं नास्ति तत् स्वामिहितायेति मत्वा क्रियते चेत् रासभवद् ताडनमेव फलमिति।द्रमिडे सर्वदोच्यते “அனாவஶ்யமா மூக்கை நுழைக்காதே” अतस्सर्वदा विचिन्त्य कार्यं कार्यमित्युक्त्वा समाप्यते लेखोयम्। शुभं भूयात्।

English Translation – “Do not meddle in matters that do not concern you,” is the wisdom the poet imparts through this verse. A man was raising both a dog and a donkey at his home, treating them with little kindness. On a fateful night, when thieves crept in, the dog did not bark. Incensed by its inaction, the donkey scolded the dog for neglecting its duty. The dog retorted that given their master’s treatment, its silence was already generous. Unable to remain silent, the donkey began to bray—a sound most unpleasant. The thieves, startled by this noise, fled. The master, investigating the commotion and finding nothing amiss, deemed the donkey deserving of punishment for its untimely racket and beat it. Was the donkey at fault for attempting to protect its home? Not in spirit, but its timing was ill-chosen, and it overstepped its bounds, leading to its unwarranted chastisement. So, the moral is that knowing when to keep silent can save you from trouble!
