My recent posts have delved into philosophical depths, so I’m opting for a lighter note today. Among the myriad material possessions I deem essential, narrowing it down to three, I’d highlight my iPhone, clothes, and shoes. You might wonder why clothes and shoes make the list. There’s a playful Sanskrit adage suggesting that “Clothes define a man.” This saying comes to life in a whimsical verse: Observing Lord Vishnu adorned in silk, the Ocean offered his daughter in marriage; yet, seeing Shiva in animal skin, the Ocean presented poison instead – किं वाससा तत्र विचारणीयं वासः प्रधानं खलु योग्यतायै।
पीताम्बरं वीक्ष्य ददौ स्वकन्यां दिगम्बरं वीक्ष्य विषं समुद्रः॥
(kiṃ vāsasā tatra vicāraṇīyaṃ vāsaḥ pradhānaṃ khalu yogyatāyai । pītāmbaraṃ vīkṣya dadau svakanyāṃ digambaraṃ vīkṣya viṣaṃ samudraḥ।।)
This charming anecdote not only lightens the mood but also reflects on the perceived importance of appearances, albeit in a humorous vein.
